Perhaps first of its kind in public university! Plagiarism detection facility has been developed at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka under UGCB/HEQEP Sub-project-'Controlling Plagiarism by using Digital Agricultural Theses Archive of Bangladesh'. With the help of this facility, detection/apprehension of plagiarized/copied texts/chapters in MS and PhD theses will be made to control plagiarism.
It may be mentioned here that a digital archive of agricultural theses of Bangladesh was established by Prof Dr Md Sekender Ali of SAU under a previous HEQEP Sub-project CP 534. This Archive contains a huge number of theses of five agricultural universities of Bangladesh including SAU. Anyone can access to the digital archive by clicking http://www.saulibrary.edu.bd/daatj
The present HEQEP Sub-project CP3655 has successfully incorporated the plagiarism software into the above mentioned Digital Theses Archive developed and designed by Saeed Sidique, ICT Consultant of CP 3655.
On January 19, a special academic council meeting was held under the Chairmanship of SAU Vice Chancellor Prof Md Shadat Ulla wherein the permissible limit of plagiarism was fixed at 35 percent of the whole text with certain reservations. A committee was formed to formulate a detail policy guideline for effective application of the plagiarism detection facility for controlling plagiarism.
Vice Chancellor Prof Shadat Ulla advised the teachers to supervising students more effectively to encourage the students do original thesis work.
