Two left-leaning student bodies on Sunday once again demanded proper investigation into the death of a Dhaka University student after he caught pneumonia allegedly for taking part in a BCL programme amid cold.
The demand was made from a protest rally held by Progressive Students’ Alliance and Anti-imperialism Student Unity in front of Ducsu on the DU campus.
Speakers threatened to lay siege to the DU vice-chancellor’s office on February 24 if their demand is not met within this time.
The student leaders alleged that leaders of Salimullah Muslim Hall unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) forced the 1st year student, Hafizur Molla, of the Marketing Department to stay outside the hall to attend a meeting of BCL despite knowing he had pneumonia.
Hafizur contracted pneumonia as he, like other fresher at the hall, had to spend the nights on the hall’s corridor which was exposed to winter air, alleged the hall inmates.
Friends and family members of Hafizur said that BCL leaders of SM Hall forced him along with other first year students to stay out for about an hour on the night to join a BCL programme which affected Hafizur badly.
As his condition deteriorated, Hafizur left the hall for his home at Faridpur.
He died on February 2 as his parents were shifting him to Dhaka for better treatment.
