Awami League?s (AL) Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Sunday said many leaders from different political parties want to join the ruling party, reflecting confidence in the development agenda of the Sheikh Hasina government.
"The people of the country have developed confidence in the government as it has been carrying out huge development activities in the last seven years. Now eighty percent of the citizens think Bangladesh can become a developed country only under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina," he said.
The ruling party leader said this while addressing a press conference held at the AL president's Dhanmondi political office.
During the conference Hanif announced the names of the party chairman candidates for the second phase of Union Parishad polls to be held on March 31, when elections to 672 UPs will be held. In reply to a question relating to some ruling party-nominated candidates being set to be elected uncontested in the first phase of the UP polls, he said "It can happen. It can't be considered our fault if a person doesn't contest the polls in the interest of local development showing confidence in the government." ?UNB
