Bangladesh has opened an embassy in Ethiopia as part of its effort to expand ties with the African countries.

The foreign ministry said the new mission at the Horn of Africa would open “newer avenues” of cooperation.

African Union’s headquarters is based at Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.

Opening of Bangladesh mission there, the foreign ministry believes, is of particular “importance” from the peacekeeping perspective.

The embassy started functioning since Mar 1 with Hanif Khan as charge d affaires.  M Monirul Islam will join as the Ambassador by Mar 15.

Ethiopia is one of the first African countries who recognised Bangladesh soon after the independence in 1971.

The foreign ministry said since then the two countries supported each other on “common and mutual interest and at different international fora.”

Ethiopia depends heavily on agriculture and is known as one of Africa’s fastest growing non-oil economies.
