Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has congratulated newly appointed chairman of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Iqbal Mahmood and Commissioner AFM Aminul Islam on assumption of their respective posts.
In a statement Friday, TIB executive director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said the ACC is one of the designated entities for preventing corruption and implementing the National Integrity Strategy.
"We welcome Senior Secretary Iqbal Mahmood and former District Judge AFM Aminul Islam as an immense responsibility of the Commission has been given to them," he said.
In the meantime, the TIB hopes that they will succeed in playing their due roles staying above all kind of influence, fear and sympathy, and provide strong leadership to win the public's faith in the Commission, the statement said.  As an effective, independent and neutral body, the ACC should play an uncompromising role in checking corruption and it is the government's responsibility to ensure suitable atmosphere for the Commission to do so, the TIB chief said.
On Thursday, the government appointed former Senior Secretary of the Economic Relations Division (ERD) Iqbal Mahmood as the ACC Chairman and former District and Sessions Judge AFM Aminul Islam as one of its Commissioners. The tenure of incumbent chairman M Bodiuzzaman and commissioner M Shahabuddin will expire on March 13 (Sunday).    ?UNB
