Youth dies while trying to avoid police chase

A young man died falling from the rooftop of a building in the city's Chawkbazar area on Friday night reportedly while fleeing to escape police arrest.
The deceased was identified as Abul Kalam, 30, son of late Nuru Miah of Shia lane of the Hoseni Dalan road in the area. Witnesses said the accident took place around 8:30pm as sub-inspector Rafique and assistant sub-inspector Mozammel of Bangshal Police Station chased Kalam when he came to Chankharpool.
Kalam went to the rooftop of the six-storey building near Hoseni Dalan and tried to climb down by a water pipe. However, he fell down after the pipe broke off, they said. Police took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead, said Inspector Mozammel Haque, in-charge of DMCH police camp. Meanwhile, victim's brother Abul Bashar alleged that police killed his brother pushing him off the building. Contacted, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Maruf Hossain Sorder said Kalam who was an accused jumped from the rooftop when police went to arrest him.     ?UNB
