The government has achieved a remarkable success in the power generation sector in the last seven years but failed to light the rural area. Aiming to achieve electrification of the rural area the government has amended its Annual Development Project (ADP) increasing the number of rural consumers to 25 lakh from 15 lakh.
According to the Master Plan the government has to provide electricity to all by 2021.  The project estimated at Tk 1,232 crore will be completed by 2017 by covering 250,000 consumers in the rural areas.
The project cost was Tk 16, 519 crore which is 17 per cent of the total allocation for power sector. Only Tk 6,519 crore have been spent as yet so the government has decided to enlarge the project.
A Rural Electrification Board (REB) official said after covering 15,000 consumers the power board has decided to cover 10,000 more consumers in the rural areas under REB. The Planning Commission has approved Tk 15,300 crore for the REB.
Emphasizing the REB the Power Board Secretary Monowar Islam sat on February 7 with the officials to fix priorities of the projects.
Of this the ADP of REB has been amended by extending to provide electricity to 10,000 more consumers.
Of the estimated amount of Tk 1,232 crore, Tk 772 crore will come from foreign loan and Tk 461.20 from government fund.
A Power Division official said after scrutiny the national economic council will approve the project.
