The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has formed a Data Bank Cell for monitoring collection of taxes from foreign workers employed in the country.
As per section C-156 of Tax Ordinance 1984, the Cell also can take initiatives for collection of taxes and imposing fines on foreign employees if it is necessity.
An official of NBR said the ten members Data Bank Cell were formed comprising representatives from the Board of Investment (BoI), Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA), NGO Bureau, National Security Intelligence (NSI), Special Branch (SB), Passport and Immigration Division, Banking and Financial Department and the NBR.
Taxes, Legal and Enforcement Member of the NBR will be the convenor of the cell while Information Management & Services member of the NBR will be a member of the cell.
The NBR Second secretary of Taxes, Legal and Enforcement will the member secretary of the cell.
According to the officials, the cell will collect data (hard and soft) of foreign employees from all involved authorities' and employers.
The cell will make a work plan and plan for making such software which will be utilized to verify the data of income tax paying in the exit points of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport-Dhaka, Osmani International Airport-Sylhet, Shah Amanat International Airport- Chittagong and other airports of the country.
The cell will also make a database of the foreign National and will plan for a collective draft database of the foreign National.
