KHULNA, May 18: Speakers at a views-exchange meeting here on Tuesday stressed the need for ensuring quality education to face global competition.
Terming the current education system as down-grading and politically-biased, they underscored the need for upgrading the system for the sake of creating skilled human resources to attain cherished development of the nation.
They also said that to implement the no. 4 point of the sustainable development goal (SDG), people must work side by side the government.
Ganoswakkharata Avijan (GA), in collaboration with an NGO Jagrata Juba Sangha (JJS), organised the meeting titled "Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target no-4/Education-2030" at the auditorium of Khulna Officers Club.
Professor Nazmul Haque of Dhaka University (DU) presented the keynote paper while Executive Director of JJS ATM Zakir Hossain delivered the welcome speech.
It was addressed, among others, by Khulna University Professors - Shahnewaz Nazim Uddin and Dr. Dilip Kumar Dutta, Programme Officer of GA Rajoshree Gain, and Khulna Zonal Head of UNICEF Kafil Uddin.
The keynote paper narrated that a total of 17 goals of SDG has been selected in which no. 4 has been given priority.
Hundred per cent admission will be ensured at Primary and Secondary levels and percentage of pass rate in class six will be enhanced from 80 to 100 per cent to implement the goal by 2020. Besides, percentage of women in technical and vocational education will be enhanced to 40 per cent and literacy to hundred per cent.
Students and teachers, lawyers, journalists, NGO representatives and leaders of civil society from Satkhira, Bagerhat, Jessore, Narail, Magura, Jhenidah and Khulna districts attended the meeting.
