The day-long hartal, enforced by Parbatya Nagarik Parishad and Parbatya Bangali Chhatra Parishad to press home their eight-point demand, is underway peacefully in the three hill districts on Thursday.

The shutdown was called mainly to protest against the PM's decision to pull out all army camps from the hilly areas and amendment to some sections of the CHT Land Disputes Resolution Commission Act framed in 2001, said Abdul Majid, vice president of the central committee of Parbatya Bangali Chhatra Parishad.

No vehicle was seen plying the roads in Rangamati while no long-route bus left the district town.

Besides, examinations in all educational institutions have been cancelled in the district.

A large number of policemen have been deployed in several points of the districts to fend off any trouble.
