9 killed in Madaripur road crash

Madaripur: Nine people, including a woman, were killed and 35 others injured as a bus plunged into a ditch by the Dhaka-Barisal Highway in Sadar upazila on Friday.

Five of the deceased were identified as Hiralal Baroi, 60, a resident of Narkulia village in Ujirpur upazila of Barisal district, M Ali, 45, of Natun Bazar of the same district, Sufia Begum, 50, of Dhaka and Mizan, 40.

Superintendent of police of the district Sarwar Hossain said the Barisal-bound bus of ‘Sugandha Paribahan’ from Dhaka fell into the ditch breaking the railing of a bridge at Samaddar around 2:30pm after its driver lost control over the steering, leaving five people dead on the spot and 39 others injured.

On information, three fire-fighting units recovered the bodies and took the injured to different hospitals, said assistant director of Madaripur Fire Service and Civil Defence Nazrul Islam.

Of the injured, three succumbed to their injuries at Madaripur Sadar Hospital while another died at Rajoir Upazila Health Complex, the SP
 dded.

Talking to reporters, Madaripur Deputy Commissioner M Kamal Uddin Biswas said the administration gave each family of the deceased Tk 10,000.
