CHITTAGONG, June 11: Police arrested a person today from Shital Jhorna area under Bayezid Police Station on suspicion of his involvement in the killing of Mahmuda Akhtar Mitu, wife of SP Babul Akhtar.
Police suspected that he is the mastermind behind the murder.
The arrested was identified as M Shah Zaman Robin, 28, son of Shah Jahan of Laksham.
Robin is the person who was seen in the CCTV footage to have followed Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of Superintendent of Police Babul Akhter, before her murder, said Iqbal Bahar, Police Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police at a press conference this noon.
'We suspect that Robin knows everything about the murder and we trying to find out new clues through interrogation,' he added.
Wearing a check-shirt and blue jeans trousers, he was seen talking over a cell phone while he was following Mitu. He might have communicated the whereabouts of the victim to his accomplices over mobile phone, the CMP Commissioner said.
Meanwhile, the driver of a black microbus, who was arrested on Wednesday, was freed as police did not find his links with the murder through verification and interrogation. Besides, police arrested another person identified as Abu Nasar Gunnu on suspicion from a Hathazari shrine.
On June 5, three miscreants stabbed and shot dead Mitu, 32, who left her OR Nizam Road residence on foot to drop her son at a bus stop at GEC intersection around 6:45am.
The victim's husband Babul Akhter, who served as Additional Deputy Commissioner of the detective branch of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) earlier, got promotion as superintendent of police recently and was posted at the police headquarters in Dhaka.
In a mysterious statement, Ansar al-Islam, the Bangladesh chapter of al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), has condemned the killing of Mahmuda Akhter Mitu, wife of Superintendent of Police Babul Akhter, US-based SITE Intelligence Group reports.
The statement came hours after the law enforcement agencies had launched a special week-long anti-militant drive across the country.
Mitu was stabbed and shot dead by motorbike-riding assailants near GEC intersection in the port city of Chittagong on Sunday when she was taking her son to a school bus pick-up point.
According to a report on SITE website, the militant outfit, which is infamous for its brutal style of killing people, termed Mitu's killing "impermissible under Islam."
