Three police officers of Babuganj Police Station in Barishal have been withdrawn after a court-ordered case was filed against them for torturing three women in custody.
Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Babuganj Police Station, filed the case on Saturday night. After the case was filed, the three accused cops were sent to the district police lines on Sunday, the OC said.
The withdrawn police officers are Sub-inspector Khalilur Rahman, Assistant Sub-inspector Nasir Uddin and Constable Nipa Rani Baidya of Babuganj Police Station.
According to Babuganj Police Station and court sources, a picnic was organized at the house of one Mahinur Begum of Dakshin Dehergati village of the upazila on March 3. A local called the police after loud music was played. The police went to the spot and asked them to turn down the volume of the music.
At that time, six people, including the women from the house, were arrested for obstructing police work and 'injuring the police personnel with the intent to kill'. ASI Nasir Uddin filed a case in this regard, reports UNB.
On March 12, the six arrestees were produced before the Barisal Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court.
At the court, three of the arrestees - Akashi Begum, Rashida and Mala Begum - testified to the judge that they were beaten up in police custody. Judge Nurul Amin ordered the officer-in-charge of Babuganj Police Station to file a case against the three police officers for torturing the women in custody.
The court at the time also granted bail to those arrested.
Babuganj Police Station OC Mahbubur said the case was filed on Saturday night on the direction of the superintendent of police. The three cops were withdrawn and attached to the district police lines on Sunday.
