Save Dhaka people from mugging

Mugging has become one of the biggest hazards in the lives of people living in Dhaka, especially the women in open transports and men moving out late. This fearsome syndrome was also confirmed by detective branch of police who on Wednesday said they arrested 56 muggers from different bus stations of Dhaka last night. Certainly it was a success of police, but we also suspect more muggers were operating at the time at the railway and ferry stations.
Now it is time for a coordinated, comprehensive drive by all law enforcers to try to cleanse the capital city of muggers, way lifters, "malam" parties and other criminals who stalk the residents round the clock.
The muggers are active also in posh areas of the city where authorities claim to have deployed high security measures. But in fact the whole of Dhaka has been exposed to criminals of all kinds and residents feel utterly insecure even in their closest neighbourhood.
Tuesday nights' police drive followed the most recent tragic incident in which a minor baby slipped off his mother's lap and died when muggers preyed on the woman to snatch away her bag. This was just one of many sad incidents, mugging and others, in which women lose their ornaments, money and men have their cell phone and other properties robbed on both the quiet and crowded ways.
Can't Dhaka be a safe city, can't the police and other law enforcers be more active and sincere in trying to protect the citizens of this mega city? People also ask about the role of the Home Ministry and the Minister regarding failure to ensure safety of the public. After the death of the baby in the mugging attack, the Home minister and his department seem to have slightly woken up and the immediate result was the arrest of the 56 muggers in a single night.
We hope they would reinforce their efforts and spread the drive to all vulnerable points in this mega city and thus spruce up the government's image as a pro-people and people-friendly. Saving people's life and property is the most urgent requirement and top of the duties of the law enforcers. They must not neglect in this and rather call in people's support to make their drive more effective.
However, at the same time the police should desist from torturing innocent people for not paying money or not complying with their orders -- followed by merciless beating, kicking and doing all sorts of abuse. Such scenes seen on Dhaka roads frequently erode the police's image as friends of the people and deplore the government's assurance that members of the public will enjoy full safety in this city.
