Farmers benefit from watermelon farming in S’ganj chars

SIRAJGANJ, May 4: The farmers are making much profit by cultivating watermelon on the Jamuna River char areas in Kazipur, Shahzadpur and Belkuchi upazilas of the district.
Where there is water everywhere during a certain time of the year, now there are sandy char lands. The farmers are cultivating different crops, vegetables and fruits on these fertile char lands.
Not a single inch is left vacant at these char lands. The farmers, using their experience, are cultivating different crops, vegetables and fruits.
Now the lands are abound with mature watermelons. The farmers of Afzalpur, Nasimpur, Goalia Hossen, Baro Pakhia and Kakua unions in Belkuchi Upazila, Natuapara, Nishchintapur, Monsur Nagar and Tekani unions in Kazipur Upazila and Koijuri and Potazia unions of Shahzadpur Upazila are now busy in cultivating watermelon.
The farmers said they do not have to spend extra to cultivate watermelon; so many of them are becoming interested to cultivate the fruit.
Afzal Hossen of Afzalpur char and Badal Mia of Kakua char in Belkuchi Upazila said, besides cultivating paddy, groundnut and chilli, they also cultivate watermelon on the char lands. They do not have to spend extra in this connection. Besides, they are getting fair price of their produce.
Nosim Uddin of Goalia Hossen char in the upazila said, "I cultivated watermelon first in this year. As the weather was favourable, I got much output. Besides, I got fair price. Wholesalers from Belkuchi and Sadar upazilas are buying the fruit from me."
Sona Mia of Koijuri char in Shahzadpur Upazila said, "I profited much by cultivating watermelon last year. This year also I cultivated the fruit on six bighas of land. I'm selling per piece watermelon at Tk 60 to 100 to the wholesalers."
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension here Md Arshed Ali said the watermelon is not much cultivated here. For the last four years, the local farmers have been cultivating the fruit with their own initiative. Watermelon has been cultivated on 150 ha of lands in the district this year. As the char lands are fertile, the watermelon grows well here. Though its size is a bit small, it is very sweet. The farmers are becoming gradually interested to cultivate watermelon as they are getting good yield and fair price. The agriculture department is also helping farmers in cultivating the fruit.
