SIRAJGANJ, May 23: Due to onrush of water from upstream and incessant rainfall for the last several days, the water in the Jamuna River has increased, eroding houses, croplands and numerous establishments at Enayetpur area in Shahzadpur Upazila of the district.
The week-long erosion devoured about 20 houses and 50 bighas of croplands. Besides, different establishments including educational institutions and handlooms are under the threat of erosion.
Local people alleged that the authority concerned is not taking any steps though the erosion is continuing.
Sources said Enayetpur is located on the right side of the Jamuna River. Due to the increase of water, the river is eroding the area fast. The erosion panic has gripped several thousand people of six villages across about six kilometres from Brahmangram-Arkandi till Pachil area.
The week-long erosion destroyed about 20 houses including those of Rezaul Karim, Shahidul Islam, Ibrahim Hossen, Jabbar Ali and Zahidul Islam of Brahmangram. Besides, hundreds of fruit-bearing and herbal trees have gone into the river.
The continuous erosion has imperilled Nayapara Government Primary School, Arkandi Forkania Hafizia Madrasa, Brahmangram Tara Jame Mosque, Enayetpur Cloths Market, 30 handlooms and about 25,000 houses of at least three villages.
Abir Ahmed of Brahmangram and Abdul Latif of Arkandi Char said, due to sudden increase in river water, at least eight houses and croplands of Brahmangram went into the Jamuna in about one and a half hours on Tuesday midnight. If the erosion continues to such extent, hundreds of local people will have to lose everything.
In this connection, Union Parishad Member Sohrab Ali said last year water resources minister visited the eroded areas and assured of taking steps, but that was not materialised. As a result, the local people are worried that they will be severely hit by the erosion in the upcoming rainy season.
Shahzadpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nazmul Hossen Khan said he will take steps to check the erosion after contacting with higher authority.
Executive Engineer of District Water Development Board Md Ariful Islam said geo-bags have been dumped at the eroded areas to check erosion.
