River erosion intensifies at Enayetpur

SIRAJGANJ, June 22: The water level of all the rivers including the Jamuna River has increased during the last couple of days, intensifying erosion in many areas of Enayetpur Thana.
The largest cloth market in Enayetpur, Khaja Unus Ali Medical Collage and Hospital, its university campus, and 27,000 houses of five villages are facing the erosion.
According to field sources, Water Development Board (WDB) is not taking any initiative to control the erosion. Locals demanded immediate steps to stop it.
Local sources said at least 60 houses, Noyapara Government Primary School, Braman Village, graveyard, mosque, madrasa and many crops land  of Brahmangram, Arkandi Char and Jalalpur under Enayetpur Thana have been washed away in the last three days.
As the water level is increasing every day, continuous erosion occurs in five kilometre area from Arkandi to Pachil. As a result, Khaza Younus Ali Medical Collage and Hospital, its university, the largest cloth market in the country, Sirajganj-Pachil regional road, three educational institutions, Eidgah and several religious institutions are facing erosion threat.
Local residents Abdul Jalil Sarker, Abul Kashem, Jamila Begum, Hawa Khatun and Nargis Khatun said 55 houses including their houses and trees have gone into the river.
Chairman of Enayetpur Khukni Union Parishad (UP) Mulluk Chand Miah and Jalalpur UP Chairman Haji Sultan Mahmud said river erosion has been occurring in the area for the last couple of years, but the authorities concerned did not take any initiative; so the extent of the erosion is increasing. If the erosion lasts for seven days, Brahmangram, Arkandi Char and Jalalpur area will go into the river. They demanded river bank protection dam immediately to control erosion in the areas.
Shahjadpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Nazmul Hossain khan said, "We talked with the high officials  of WDB about the river erosion. We also proposed for geo bag damping in an emergency basis."
"We hope that the WDB will take necessary steps immediately," he added.
Executive Engineer of Sirajganj WDB Mohammad Ariful Islam said, "It is not possible to protect the huge area of Enayetpur by geo bag damping. We sent a project proposal of Tk 800 crore to the concerned office for permanent protection. If the proposal is approved, the protection from the river erosion will be possible."
