SIRAJGANJ, Oct 13: The people of ethnic community are passing their days amid hardship during the continuous lean season.
In this season, the fields remain under water, while about two months and a half are left for Aman harvesting. As a result, about 25,000 people of Tarash and Raiganj upazilas including those leaving around the Chalan Beel are suffering much as they have no work now.
They maintain livelihood through working in the fields round the year, but they fell in trouble during this lean period.
While talked, the people of the community said they mainly live in Tarash and Raiganj upazilas of Sirajganj and Gurudaspur and Singra upazilas of Natore. As most of them don't have personal land, they live on government khas land or beside road in deplorable huts. During the lean season, they even can't collect two-time meal.
Sathi Urao of Gulta Village in Tarash Upazila said, "We are landless people. Though we work round the year, but we have no work in this season. We have to suffer much for ensuring two-time meal. The male members go out of home for work. Many women of the community make brooms with common reeds and sell those in market. With this income they somehow manage their families. But, those who can't make the brooms have to suffer much."
Minoti Urao of the same area said, "We don't have to suffer for income in dry season when IRRI-Boro paddies are cultivated and from June to August when the harvesting continues. But after this, we suffer much. We get Taka 350 to 450 per day for working in field at other times of the year but in lean season our wage comes down to Taka 200 to 250. During the Bengali month of Agrahayan, Aman harvesting starts when we don't have to suffer for income. Besides, we work in brickfields at that time."
President of Tarash Upazila Urao Foundation Dhirendranath Baro said, "Most of the ethnic community people are landless. They can make handicraft items which they sell sometimes and earn some money. If the government would provide them interest-free loan, they would not have to fall in trouble."
President of District Adibashi Forum Sushil Mahato said, "People of different ethnic communities like Santal, Buna, Mahato, Urao, Baro and Teli live in the district. Of them, the condition of Mahato community people is a bit good. The people of other communities are day labourers and landless. So, they mostly remain unfed at this time. We urge the government to provide some help to them during this lean season."
