HC suggests e-commerce customers to rein in their greed

High Court (HC) has suggested customers to control their greed in order to escape from the traps of e-commerce companies.

At the same time, the HC suggested the authorities concerned to launch an awareness campaign among people.

A HC Division bench, comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mustafizur Rahman, made the suggestion during the hearing on a writ petition on Sunday (Sept 19) which was submitted seeking directive to authorities concerned to put an end to phone tapping.

Advocate Shishir Monir appeared on behalf of the writ petitioner, while deputy attorney general Bipul Bagmar appeared on behalf of the state.

At one stage of the hearing, the HC bench asked Advocate Shishir Monir to tell something about e-commerce business. Responding to the directive, Shishir Monir said, "In Bangladesh, e-commerce platforms often make too many offers which doesn't exist in Alibaba or Amazon. Consumers in our country often become the victims of fraudulent practices due to their excessive greed."

Then the court said, "Yes, we often see it. For example, 'Buy One, Get One.' If anyone buys plane ticket, he get free stay at hotel. You file public interest litigation (PILs). You should try to create awareness among people so that they control their greed in order to escape from the traps of e-commerce companies."

Later, the HC set September 29 to pass order on hearing the writ submitted seeking directive to authorities concerned to put an end to phone tapping.
