10 lakh Covishield vaccines arrive in Dhaka

After long seven and a half months, one million (10 lakh) doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca (Covishield) vaccine doses, purchased from Serum Institute of India (SII) have arrived in the country.

The consignment of vaccine doses arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka by a commercial flight from India on Saturday evening.
Beximco's chief operating officer (COO) confirmed the Daily Observer Online about it on Monday.

He said the consignment of vaccine doses arrived from India at about 6:00pm. The doses were taken to the Beximco Warehouse at Gazipur which will be sent to different districts and upazilas of the country.

Contacted, Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services Dr Abul Bashar Mohammed Khurshid Alam said, "Bangladesh has received Indian vaccine after a long time. Since Beximco is involved in the process, their representative will have to receive the consignment of vaccine doses at the airport. The vaccine doses will be sent to different districts through them (Beximco) later on."

India stopped vaccine export in March following deadly spikes in Covid-19 deaths and cases in the country. Some 190 countries, including Bangladesh, were affected by the sudden decision.

In November last year, Bangladesh's health ministry signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding with the Serum and Beximco to import three crore doses of Covishied vaccine which was developed by SII in collaboration with Oxford University and AstraZeneca.

Serum was supposed to deliver the jabs over a period of six months – 50 lakh a month.

The first consignment of 50 lakh doses of the vaccine arrived in Dhaka on January 25. The second batch of 20 lakh doses arrived here on February 22. India halted vaccine supply afterwards putting Bangladesh's vaccination campaign in jeopardy.
