Hurting religious sentiments: Taslima, 2 others chargesheeted


Police have submitted a chargesheet against three individuals, including controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin, in a case filed under Section 57 of the ICT Act on charges of hurting religious sentiments.

Nazmul Nishat, inspector of the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC), the investigating officer of the case, submitted the chargesheet to the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's court on October 3.
The two others named in the charge-sheet are editor of the 'Women Chapter' Supriti Dhar and acting editor Shucheesmita Simonti.

CTTC, however, dropped the name of the 'Women Chapter' advisor Lina Huque from the chargesheet as the IO failed to collect the address of the accused during the probe.

Showing the accused as a fugitive in the chargesheet, the IO also applied to the court to issue an arrest warrant against them.

On April 26, 2018, Mahbub Alam, editor of the monthly Al Bayyinat filed the case with Cyber Tribunal in Dhaka against the four people on charges of hurting religious sentiments.

Following the allegation, the court asked the Shahjahanpur police station to record the allegation as a case against the four people including Taslima Nasrin.

According to the case, complaints against the accused that an article of Taslima Nasrin regarding a rape incident was published at the 'Women Chapter' news portal that allegedly hurt the religious sentiments of people.
