Bangladesh Gano Odhikar Parishad convener Dr Reza Kibria and member secretary Nurul Huque Nur came under attack when they were going to pay homage at Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani's shrine at Santosh in Tangail district on Wednesday morning.
Wednesday was Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani's 45th anniversary of death.
Some 50 leaders and activists of Tangail district unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jubo League attacked them when they were near the shrine at about 10:00am, said the party's senior joint convener Shakiluzzaman.
The local BCL leaders and workers attacked the Gano Odhikar Parishad leaders and activists with sticks and brickbats, leaving Reza, Nur and some of their followers injured, said the Gano Odhikar Praishad leader Rashed Khan.
The leaders were again attacked while they were being brought by the police vehicles, he alleged. They came under attack in presence of police, he said.
Regarding the matter, additional superintendent of police (ASP) of Tangail Sarwar Hossain said the activists and leader of Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology University unit BCL attacked the parishad leaders and workers.
Later, a chase and counter chase occurred between the two sides.
However, police rescued Reza, Nur and the parishad members from the spot.
Two to three law enforcers were injured during the attack, said ASP Sarwar, adding that the situation is now under control.
