Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) mayor and Gazipur City Awami League general secretary Mohammad Jahangir Alam has finally been expelled from Awami League for life for his controversial remarks about Bangabandhu and the number of freedom-fighters killed during the liberation war.

Apart from expelling Jahangir Alam, his primary membership of the party was also cancelled.
Besides, directive has been given to take legal action against him.

The decision to expel Jahangir Alam for life from the party was taken at a meeting of the Awami League Central Working Committee (CWC) held at Ganabhaban on Friday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Members of the Awami League Central Working Committee were present at the meeting.

The 42-year-old Jahangir Alam, who was also served a show-cause notice earlier by the party, was expelled for his  remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the number of freedom fighters killed during the War of Liberation in 1971, at a programme back in September last.

Later, the video of his remarks went viral on social media on September 22 last. The video was four minutes in length where Jahangir was heard saying, "Our Bangabandhu had arranged the killing of 30 lakh (freedom fighters). Some 45,000 died in each of 64 districts. He had realised his own interest through it."

There were more sensitive points in his remarks which were later termed 'objectionable' by a faction of Gazipur City Awami League. The particular faction also raised the demand of his immediate expulsion from the party.

From the afternoon on the following day, a faction of Gazipur City Awami League staged demonstrations blocking different areas on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for several days. They demanded expulsion of Jahangir Alam from the posts of both Gazipur city mayor and Gazipur City Awami League general secretary. The faction was led by Gazipur City Awami League president Azmat Ullah, state minister Zahid Ahsan Russel, Gazipur City Corporation councilor Mamun Mondol and some other leaders and activists of the party.

However, on September 24, Gazipur city mayor Jahangir Alam termed the video's content 'baseless, false and fabricated'. "Those who resorted to spreading propaganda against me will be resisted with the help of people. An over-enthusiastic rival group in the party released my remarks distorting and editing it by opening a Facebook account with a false ID. I am a victim of deep-rooted conspiracy," he said.
