Son of former mayor gets life term jail in rape case

Son of a former mayor has been sentenced for life in a rape case by a court in Shariatpur district.

Shariatpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal judge Abdus Salam Khan pronounced the sentence against Masud Bepari, son of Janjira Municipality's former mayor Yunus Bepari.
Other accused--Sharif Sardar, 21 was acquitted from the charges.

The convict Masud Bepari was sent to jail.

The case statement says that a college girl was raped at night on June 29, 2019. Earlier in the afternoon, Masud asked the college girl to come to his house to meet his wife. Then the college girl went the house, but didn't find anyone there. When she was going back, Masud intercepted her and then raped her. He even tried to strangle her. At that time, Masud's accomplice Sharif Sardar guarded the former mayor's son staying outside the Sardar Bari.

Several women rescued her when she came out of the house and started shouting.

On the following day, the victim filed a case for rape against Masud Bepari and abetting rape against Sharif Sardar with Janjira Police Station.

Court sources said police detained Masud and produced him before the tribunal, but he came out of jail on bail on July 8 last. As he came out of jail just after eight days into his arrest, it created strong criticism all over. After three days, a District Judge Court ordered to send him to jail cancelling his bail. The investigation officer of the case submitted chargesheet to the tribunal on September 28, 2019. Recording the testimonies of 17 witnesses and cross examinations, the tribunal awarded Masud Bepari life-term jail sentence and acquitted Sharif Sardar.

The victim's father said, "We're partially satisfied over the tribunal's judgement. But, Sharif has destroyed my daughter's life. My daughter became the victim due to his role. We'll go to higher court to appeal against the verdict."

The plaintiff's counsel Shahidul Islam Sajib said, "We're happy over the court verdict. However, we're frustrated because Sharif Sardar was acquitted from the charges though serious allegations of creating the situation for rape was proved against him. We'll appeal against the verdict to the upper court."
