Sylhet flood situation worsens, thousands marooned


The flood situation in Sylhet has worsened due to heavy rain and onrush water from the hills over the last several days, rendering thousands of people marooned.

The rivers Surma and Kushiara were flowing above the danger levels on Tuesday morning (May 17) which is likely to rise further.
On Tuesday morning, many areas of Sylhet city including Sheikhghat, Kalapara, Mollapara, Lamapara, Ghasitula, Kalighat, Chararpar, Laldighirpar, Machimpur and Upashahar were inundated by the flood water.

Low-lying areas in Sylhet district, including many areas of the city, were flooded few days ago.

Floodwater and waste from the drains have started to enter houses in Sylhet city, mounting the sufferings of the dwellers,

Syeed Ahmad Chowdhury, a senior meteorologist at the Sylhet Meteorological Department, said it is raining in the Indian subcontinent upstream and the river water will continue to rise.

Various areas of Sylhet Sadar, Companiganj, Gowainghat, Jaintapur and Kanaighat upazilas have already been inundated due to hill slopes and rains.

Asif Ahmed, executive engineer of Sunamganj Water Development Board (WDB), said several rivers including Surma, Sari, Piyain, and Dholai are flowing at points exceeding the danger levels. The water in rivers in Sylhet has increased due to heavy rains in Meghalaya and Cherapujni of India.
