Daulatdia-Paturia ferry operations disrupted by strong current

Ferry services on the Daulatdia-Paturia route are being disrupted due to strong current in the rivers Padma and Jamuna.

Around five kilometres long tailback was seen on the Dhaka-Khulna highway from Daulatdia ferry ghat point on Thursday noon.

Goalanda Upazila Water Development Board official Salma Khatun said water levels in the rivers Padma and Jamuna are increasing. Water is flowing 15cm below the danger mark at Daulatida ghat point.

Commuters stuck in the traffic jam are facing hunger and thirst due to lack of food and water. They also faced sanitation problems, our local correspondent reports.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Daulatida Sector manager Shihab Uddin said the ferries now take more time to reach their destinations due to strong current with the rise of water levels in the Padma and Jamuna.

A total of 19 ferries are in operation on the Daulatdia-Paturia route, the official added.
