7 killed in Naogaon, Sylhet road accidents


Seven people were killed and three others injured in separate road accidents in Naogaon and Sylhet districts on Friday morning, police said.

In Naogaon, the accident occurred at Bablatoli crossing on Naogaon-Rajshahi regional highway under Sadar upazila around 8:00am when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw was crushed by a speeding truck.
Locals said several teachers were going to Naogaon town by a CNG-autorickshaw from Niamatpur upazila at about 8:00am. Just at that time, a Rajshahi-bound speeding truck crushed the autorickshaw at Bablatoli crossing. The autorickshaw was badly damaged, leaving five people including four teahers dead on the spot, while another injured was rushed to a local hospital.
 
Five persons, all the passengers of the auto-rickshaw, were killed on the spot under the impact of the collision, said Nazrul Islam Jewel, officer-in-charge of Naogaon Sadar Model Police Station.

The OC said truck plunged into a roadside ditch after hitting the autorickshaw from the rear side. Five autorickshaw passengers died on the spot. Both the truck and autorickshaw are now under police custody. An injured has been admitted to hospital. However, the truck driver managed to scape.

Police were yet to identify the deceased immediately.

Meanwhile, in Sylhet, a woman and her son were killed when a truck hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Companiganj at 6:00am.

The deceased were identified as Hanufa Begum and her son, Emraj Mia, of the upazila, said police.

The speeding truck crashed into the auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction in Telikhan of the upazila, leaving the mother-son duo dead on the spot and three others injured, Sukanta Chakraborty, officer-in-charge of Companiganj police station, said.

The injured have been admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital (SOMCH), he added.

The bodies will be handed over to the family members after completing legal formalities, said the OC. "We have seized the truck. But its driver and helper managed to escape."
