Savar college teacher murder: Arrest of accused student demanded

Teachers and students of different educational institutions in Savar staged demonstrations on Tuesday demanding arrest of the killer of college teacher Utpal Kumar Sarker in Ashulia of Savar.

They formed seperate human chains in front of Shaheed Minar in Savar upazila and Hazi Yunus Ali School and College in Chitrashail of Jamgara in the morning.

They demanded  immediate arrest of killer student Ashraful Islam Jitu who allegedly beat the college teacher to death with a cricket stump and sought maximum punishment.  

The students also demanded implementation of their six-point demand including to create a teenager gang-free area. They warned of a tougher movement in future if their demands are not met.

On Saturday (June 25) afternoon, Utpal Kumar Sarker, a lecturer of the Humanities Department of Hazi Yunus Ali School and College, suffered critical injuries allegedly the student beat him up with a cricket stump on the college ground.

Later, Utpal was rescued and admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar.

Utpal breathed his last while undergoing treatment around 6:00 am on Monday, said Nasir Uddin, operation theatre in-charge of Enam Medical College and Hospital.

His elder brother filed a murder case with Ashulia Police Station following his death.

Slain teacher Utpal Kumar Sarker was the son of late Ajit Kumar Sarker of village Elongjani Duttapara under Ullapara upazila in Sirajganj district. He joined as a lecturer at the Department of Political Science under the college section of Hazi Yunus Ali School and College at Chitrashail in Ashulia in 2013.

The accused student remained absconding after being released after the incident. He is a student of Science in Class X. He is also a relative of Haji Hazrat Ali, owner of the educational institution. Even, none of his parents was found going to his house.

Efforts are on to arrest the suspects, said Emdadul Huque, sub-inspector of Ashulia Police Station.
