A court in Rangpur has sentenced five rapists to life-term jail for murdering a teenage girl after gang rape at Gangachara in Rangpur district.

Besides, each of the convicts has been fined Tk 1 lakh.

The convicts were Abuzar Rahman, 28, son of Shamsul Alam; Alamgir Hossain, 27, son of Hannan, Nazir Hossain, 32, son of Matiar Rahman Munshi, Abdul Karim, 29, son of Abdur Rahman; and Aminur Rahman of village Narasingha Mornea. Among them, Alamgir Hossain is absconding.

The case statement and court sources reveal that the prime accused Abuzar Rahman had a love affair with victim Shahina. The 16-year-old girl became pregnant when their love affair turned into physical relation. But Abuzar declined to marry the girl when he given pressure to marry her. On May 14, 2015, Shahina's father Ayub Ali went to a wedding ceremony in Lalmonirhat along with her mother. At that time, Shahina and her 12-year-old niece were at their home alone. Taking advantage of the situation, convict Abuzar along with his accomplices went to Shahina's house in the evening. Then he called Shahina out of her home and took her to a nearby crop field where he along with his accomplices slit the throat of the girl after gang rape. Then the body of Shahina was dumped into the crop-field.

Returning to home on that fateful night, Ayub Ali didn't find his daughter Shahina at home. Then he started looking for his daughter. After remaining under trial in the court for long seven years, the court pronounced judgement in the case on Thursday.

Public prosecutor Jahangir Hossain Tuhin said the court sentenced five accused to life-term jail on the basis of testimonies and evidence.
