Rangamati headmaster gets life in prison for rape of student
A court in Rangamati on Tuesday sentenced a headmaster to life imprisonment for raping a schoolgirl at Langadu upazila in the district in 2020.
Rangamati Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge AEM Ismail Hossain pronounced the verdict in the early afternoon.
The convict, Abdur Rahim, was the headmaster of Korolyachhari RS High School in the upazila.
The court also fined him Tk 10 lakh, in default, he will have to suffer three years more in jail, said the court's public prosecutor Rajib Chakma.
The verdict also mentioned that if convict Abdur Rahim fails to pay the fine within the next 90 days, the movable of immovable property owned by him will be seized and auctioned as per the state law.
Abdur Rahim was convicted of an offense punishable under Section 9(1) of the Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Act, 2000.
The rape case was filed on October 5, 2020 at Langadu police station.
According to the prosecution, Abdur Rahim forcibly raped the girl in a room of Korolyachhari R S High School on September 25, 2020.
A case was filed by the victim's mother with Langadu Police Station on October 5 accusing Abdur Rahim. Police later submitted a charge-sheet against him to the court on October 28.
Advocate Rajeev Chakma, the lawyer of the plaintiff, said he was happy with the judgment.
State counsel (PP) Saiful Islam Abhi said: "We are satisfied with the verdict. We have been able to prove the case."
