SIRAJGANJ, Jan 21: Mustard fields are spreading yellow look in the district. Farmed bees are flying from flower to flower to collect honey.
Bees are storing their collected honey in honey boxes set beside mustard fields. Both honey collection and mustard pollination are going on at a time.
With increasing mustard production, the honey production is also increasing. They are benefitting in a coordinated system.
According to the claim of the Department of Agriculture (DAE)-Sirajganj, farmers were given fertilisers and seeds as incentives; that is why, they have cultivated mustard also on fallow lands.
Mustard growers were encouraged for giving chances to bee growers for setting honey boxes.
With a honey production target of 297 metric tons (mt) 101 bee growers have set up about 13,000 boxes in 63,500 hectares (ha) of land in the district. So far, about 50 mt honey has been collected. Their living standard is changing with economic development.
While talking, bee growers desired of getting honey processing and modern preserving system, government loan and patronisation.
Bee grower Manzu Islam is collecting honey from mustard fields of Dharail Village at Ullapara Bangala Union for about last ten years. He has started honey business with about Tk 25 lakh capital, managed as loan. He has set up 210 boxes.   He gets about 700 kilogram (kg) honey from these boxes per 8-day.
If bank loan is given at an easy term and government patronisation is provided, it is possible to make huge revenue from honey cultivation in the district, he added.
Bee grower Yasin Sheikh from Dinajpur has set up 100 honey boxes in mustard fields of Chandpur Village in Raiganj Upazila of the district. He said, honey is collected weekly, and 10-12 men are working by rotation.
This season, the wholesale price of honey is very poor; per kg honey is selling at Tk 150; and general people are purchasing at Tk 350-400.
District Bee Grower Association's ex-president Abdur Rashid said, mustard honey tastes good; the demand is also good; sale faces no problem.
Compared to last year, this year honey price is cheaper, he added.
At present, per maund (40-kg) honey is selling at Tk 6,000 against Tk 8,000-9,000 in the last year.
He further said, but bee growers hope the honey price will increase, and if not, they will have to fall into loss. According to the DAE, this season, the mustard production target is  78,000 mt.
Deputy Director (DD) of the DAE Bablu Kumar Sutradhar said, both farmers and bee growers get benefits equally from mustard fields. After providing incentives of fertilizer and seed the mustard cultivation
has increased in the district, he added.
He further said, honey collection from mustard fields is profitable, and day by day bee growers' number is also going up.
"We are hoping the target of honey collection will be met," the DAE DD maintained.
