Narsingdi JCD leader dies after clash, another injured

A Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader died on Thursday after being shot on his head during a clash between two factions of the BNP-backed student organisation in Narsingdi town on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased was Sadequr Rahman, 32, was a former senior joint convener of district Chhatra Dal's convening committee. He was the son of Alauddin, a former union parishad member of Ward No. 7 in Hajipur union under Sadar upazila in the district.
Sadequr was declared dead at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 7:30pm after he was taken there with bullet injuries, said Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of the DMCH police camp.

He said another JCD leader Ashraful Islam, 20, who was also shot during the clash, is being treated at the same hospital.

It was learnt that the Central JCD approved a five-member partial committee of the District JCD comprising Siddiqur Rahman Nahid as president, Mainuddin Bhuiyan as senior vice-president and Mehedi Hasan as general secretary on January 26 last. Since then, the deprived leaders and workers have been demanding the cancellation of the partially declared committee. In sequel to it, several attacks were carried out at the residence of BNP joint secretary general and Narsingdi district BNP convener Khairul Kabir Khokon or district BNP office at Chinishpur in Narsingdi Sadar.

In sequel to it, deprived JCD leaders and workers staged demonstration making a showdown of motorcycles in front of the District BNP office at Chinishpur on Thursday. At one stage, another rival group of JCD launched a sudden attack on them which led to a violent clash between both the groups. During the clash, two post-deprived JCD leaders -- Sadequr and Ashraful -- were critically injured receiving bullet injuries on their head and back. They were rushed to Narsingdi District Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctors referred them to the DMCH. Sadequr died on his way to the DMCH.

Former vice-president of Narsingdi district JCD Mainuddin Bhuiyan alleged that at the directive of district BNP convener Kahirul Kabir Khokon, attackers led by district JCD president Siddiqur Rahman Nahid had launched attack and opened fire. Later, Sadequr died while the injured were being taken to the DMCH.
