Noakhali BNP leader detained over remarks on PM Hasina

Police detained a BNP leader from Noakhali, who made derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on Sunday.

The BNP man was identified as Abdur Rahman, the chairman of Chatarpaiya union parishad in Senbagh upazila of Noakhali and joint general secretary of the upazila unit of the BNP.

Police detained Rahman from a hotel room in Nayapaltan area of the capital around 4am on Sunday, said Senbagh police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Iqbal Hossain Patwari.
“The local Awami League unit is preparing to file a case against the BNP leader for his indecent remarks about the prime minister,” the official added.

Sources said that Abdur Rahman was on the run after a video of him making derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a local meeting of Swechhasebak Dal on Thursday evening went viral online.

Earlier, police detained three people, including Abdur Rahman's son, Nazmul Hasan Hridoy, during a raid carried out to detain Abdur Rahman.

A 1:58-minute video of his speech caught the attention of the district administration, and since then police had been trying to detain him.
