A Rohingya man was killed and five others, including a member of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), were injured during a gunfight between BGB and a group of drug dealers at Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar district on Wednesday.
The incident took place at around 1pm in Leda area under Hnila union of the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Md Rafique Miah, 51, a resident of Rohingya Camp No-24, and the injured were Tawhidul Islam, Md Ismail, Md Usman, Mujibur Rahman, and the identities of another injured could not be known immediately.
BGB-2, Teknaf Camp Commander Lt Col Mohiuddin said based on secret information, a team of the battalion conducted a raid in the area and arrested a drug peddler at around 12.30pm.
A clash broke out between BGB personnel and a group of drug dealers when they tried to snatch the arrestee, leaving a BGB man critically injured.
"At one stage of the clash, BGB men had to fire in self defence as the miscreants opened fire on us. A Rohingya man died on the spot and five others sustained bullet injuries," he said.
The injured were taken to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, he added.
