Bangladesh Nationalist Party has rejected the verdict of a Rajshahi court that sentenced the party’s central committee executive member and Rajshahi district unit convenor Abu Sayeed Chand to three years’ imprisonment in jail in a fraud case.

BNP chairperson’s political advisor Mizanur Rahman Minu said this at a press conference on Tuesday.

He also announced that the party will hold a procession and a rally on October 1 protesting against the prescribed verdict.

Minu alleged that state minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam made the judge to deliver the verdict against BNP leader Abu Sayeed Chand to harass him.
Earlier, Rajshahi Judicial Magistrate Court-1 Judge Maruf Allam on Sunday sentenced Chand to three years’ imprisonment and fined him Tk 5,000 for taking from various persons and provided them fake appointments letters in 2007.

BNP’s Rajshahi divisional assistant organising secretary Shahin Shawkat said that under the direct influence of Shahriar Alam, the prescribed verdict against Chand was given to keep him away from the upcoming national election. He alleged that Shahriar trying to destroy the district BNP’s leadership.

He said that the plaintiff appealed to the court to withdraw the case against Chand on July 13. ‘The court accepted the plaintiff statement and was set to dismiss the case and acquit the accused on the following day. But, the case continued for some unknown reasons’, he said.

Shahin said that the court jailed their leader on Sunday although there were no witnesses and arguments in the court in the past four hearings.

He said Rajshahi district BNP is well organised under the strong leadership of Chand. He alleged that this verdict has been given to destroy the district BNP’s leadership and to make Chand out of elections as he was a strong candidate in his area .
