Awami League candidate in Cox's Bazar-1 seat Salauddin Ahmed's nomination paper has been cancelled on loan default while Kalyan Party chairman Maj Gen (Retd) Syed Muhammad Ibrahim's nomination paper declared valid.

A total of 13 candidates submitted their nomination papers to contest the coming Jatiya Sangsad election from Cox's Bazar-1 (Chakaria-Pekua) seat. After scrutinising those on Sunday morning, the Returning Officer announced that the nomination forms of eight, out of 13, candidates were valid.

The nomination papers of the rest five were cancelled on different grounds. They were Shafiqul Islam, Kamar Uddin Arman, Shamsuddin Mohammad Ilyas and Shahnewaz Chowdhury.

Salauddin Ahmed is a loan defaulter of two banks, the District Returning Officer said.
UNB adds: According to the district returning officer's office, Salahuddin's nomination was declared invalid due to his defaulting on a loan of Tk 47 crore.

Salahuddin Ahmed and other directors of 'Fish Preservers' obtained a loan of Tk 50 crore from the Laldighi branch of Janata Bank Ltd in Cox's Bazar, using the company as collateral. The loan was later defaulted.

Despite subsequent changes in the company's board of directors, Salahuddin Ahmed remains a guarantor for the loan as per the bank's terms.

According to the Credit Information Bureau (CIB) report of Bangladesh Bank, Salahuddin Ahmed was a loan defaulter on the day of submission of nomination papers on November 30, which made his nomination invalid according to the law.

While speaking to journalists in this regard, Salahuddin Ahmed said, "Everything regarding the defaulted loan was resolved through the court. I still don't understand why my nomination was rejected. I will appeal to the Election Commission in this regard."
