Eight killed, 10 injured in road mishaps

Eight people including a couple were killed and at least 10 others injured in separate road accidents in five districts- Bogura, Pabna, Gazipur, Rangpur and Bagerhat, on Tuesday.

BOGURA: Two persons were killed and two others injured in a collision between a CNG-driven auto-rickshaw and a pickup van in Sadar Upazila of the district on Wednesday morning.

The accident took place in Matidali area on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway of the upazila at around 8 am.

The deceased were identified as auto-rickshaw driver Moklesur Rahman, 50, son of Yunus Ali; and passenger Rafiqul Islam, 52, son of Abul Hossain. Both of them were residents of Dakshin Shyampur Village under Shibganj Upazila in the district.

The injured persons are currently undergoing treatment at Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.

Quoting locals, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Bogura Sadar Police Station (PS) Tajul Islam said a CNG-run auto-rickshaw was coming to the district town from Shibganj Upazila in the morning with three passengers on its board. On the way, a Rangpur-bound pickup van coming from the opposite direction collided head on with the CNG-powered auto-rickshaw due to dense fog in Matidali area on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway, which left two people including the auto-rickshaw driver dead on the spot and two other passengers injured.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies from the scene.

Later on, the body of auto-rickshaw driver Mokhlesur was handed over to his family members while Rafiquls body is still under police custody, said the ASI.

The law enforcers could seize the pickup van as its driver along with his vehicle managed to flee the scene soon after the accident.

However, a case was filed with Bogura Kundarhat Highway PS in this regard, the ASI added.

SANTHIA, PABNA: A motorcyclist was killed after being hit by a truck in Santhia Upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The accident took place in Gangarampur area on the Dhaka-Pabna highway of the upazila at around 3 pm.

The deceased was identified as Atiqur Rahman Shihab, 37, son of Siddiqur Rahman, a resident of Fakirpara Village under Santhia Municipality.

Local and the deceaseds family sources said Shihab was heading towards Pabna Town from Santhia at noon riding by a motorcycle. On the way, a truck coming from the opposite direction hit his motorcycle in Gangarampur area on the Dhaka-Pabna highway at around 3 pm, which left him seriously injured.

Locals rescued the injured and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where Shihab was declared dead by the on-duty doctor.

Being informed, police recovered the body.

However, the law enforcers could not be able to arrest the truck driver as he along with his vehicle managed to flee the scene soon after the accident.

Madhpur Highway PS SI Hashem confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard. 

GAZIPUR: A man and his wife were killed and their son was injured in a crash between a truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Mouchak-Fulbaria road in Kaliakair Upazila of the district on Tuesday afternoon.

The accident took place at around 3:15 pm in Hossain Market area in the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Mojibur Rahman, 75, and his wife Habiba, 65, residents of Kachighata Village under Fulbaria Union of the upazila, confirmed Abul Fazal Mohammad Nasim, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaliakair PS.

Quoting locals, Fulbaria Police Camp In-Charge SI Sohel Molla said the couple along with their son were going to attend in a relatives funeral riding on the auto-rickshaw. On the way, a speedy truck rammed into the auto-rickshaw from the opposite direction in Hossain Market area, leaving the trio critically injured.

Locals rescued the injured and took them to a nearby hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Habiba Khatun dead and referred the others to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Later on, Mojibur Rahman succumbed to his injuries on the way to the DMCH.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies.

However, the law enforcers also seized the truck and arrested its driver.

Legal action would be taken in this regard, the SI added.

RANGPUR: Two young men were killed and two others injured in a collision between a trolley and a motorcycle in Taraganj Upazila of the district on Tuesday morning.

The accident took place at Burirhat Bazar in the upazila at around 9 am.

The deceased were identified as Tapas Chandra Roy, 20, son of Krishna Chandra Roy, hailed from Karengartal Khiarchara Village under Taraganj Upazila in Rangpur, and Bijay Chandra Roy, 20, from Saidpur Upazila in Nilphamari.

According to police sources, a trolley from Burirhat Bazar collided head-on with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction when it reached Burirhat Bazar area in the morning. Four people including two of the motorcycle were seriously injured at that time.

The injured were then rescued by locals and taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared the duo dead.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies.

Taraganj PS OC Siddikul Islam confirmed the incident.

MORRELGANJ, BAGERHAT: A man was killed and at least five others were injured in a road accident in Morrelganj Upazila of the district on Tuesday morning.

The accident took place in Pallimangal Bazar area on the Signboard-Bogi regional highway of the upazila at around 9 am.

The deceased was identified as Md Rezaul Islam alias Nannu Farazi, 55, son of Nurul Islam Farazi, a resident of Boropori Village under Khaulia Union in Sharankhola Upazila of the district. He worked as an office assistant in a college.   

The injured persons are: Samrat Hawlader, 20, Rabiul Islam, 20, Amir Molla, 55, and Sabuj Sheikh, 25.

It was known that a local bus from Sharankhola hit an easybike and some pedestrians after losing its control over the steering in Pallimangal Bazar area on the Signboard-Bogi regional highway of the upazila at around 9 am. Five people including Nannu Farazi were critically injured at that time.

Locals rescued the injured, but Nannu Farazi succumbed to his injuries on the way to Khulna Medical College Hospital.

Being informed, police recovered the body.

Morrelganj PS OC Mohammad Shamsuddin confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken if any complaint is received from the deceaseds family members.
