SANTHIA, PABNA, Jan 5: Onion cultivation is going on in a festive manner in Santhia Upazila of the district.

For getting good price of onion, farmers have become much interested in increasing their onion cultivation this season. They are reducing lands of other crops.

Along with farmers, school-college students are also planting saplings as labourers at Tk 500 per day.

According to sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension-Santhia, this season 17,100 hectares (ha) of land have been targeted for onion cultivation in the upazila. Of this, tuber onion has been cultivated on 1,600 ha. On the remaining 15,500 ha, Haali or sapling onion will be cultivated.

Onion growers said, tuber onion was cultivated in October-November. Haali or sapling onion is cultivated in December-January. This can be lifted in March-April.

A grower of Gourigram Village in the upazila Alamgir Hossain said, "I cultivated onion on two bighas of land in the last year. I got good price. I will cultivate onion on four bighas of land this time."

According to him, per bigha cultivation will stand at about Tk 40,000-45,000 including seed, plough, fertilizer, insecticide and labour. If there is no natural disaster, about 60-65 maunds of onion production per bigha is likely.

Another Abul Hossain of Ghughudah Village said, "By reducing the size of Rabi crops, I will increase my onion cultivation."

Farmer Firoz of Dakkhin Boalmari Village said, "This year I have raised seedbed of 3.5 kilogram seed onions. The seedbed has grown well. I will cultivate onion on five bighas."

Gourigram school students Rifat, Sajib, Rakib and Shuvo said, "This winter vacation we are doing the work of sapling plantation as labourers to earn our education expenses."

Santhia Upazila Agriculture Officer Sanjib Kumar Goswami said, "Our tuber onion cultivation target has been achieved, and already tuber onion lifting has begun. As farmers got good price earlier, they have been much interested in increasing their onion cultivation. We hope the cultivation will exceed the target."
