Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said the people haven responded to the attempt of BNP to foil the general election this year.

"BNP had taken several attempts to foil the January 7 national elections. But, the people haven responded to their attempts.

The people never accepted the vote-manipulators.

They have rigged votes in February 15, 1996.

Though the-then BNP government tried to bring voters to the polling centres using administration and law enforcers, they hadn gone to the centres," she said while exchanging views with the party leaders and dignitaries at the Kotalipara Upazila Parishad ground.

Earlier, the Prime Minister exchanged views with the field-level government officials at her residence at Tungipara in Gopalganj.

She said, "They were compelled to resign from the power in 1996. We have restored democracy waging a strong movement. They don know the Ga of Ganatantra (democracy). But, they claim that they are doing movement to restore democracy.

There movement is burning the people in arson attacks. They have burnt people setting fire to buses and trains. No one can tolerate the scene of burning of people."

"Thats why people never respond to their calls whatever the reasons are," she claimed.

She also assured the people to take necessary steps against those involved with arson attacks.

In the meeting with the officials, the Prime Minister asked the local administration to take development projects for the benefit of the country and the people.

The Prime Minister directed the administration to expedite development works in the next five years and advised them not to take up any project to spend public money but to consider how much the people of the locality will be benefitted.

"Remember one thing whenever you take up any development schemes calculate the return of the project after its implementation and how much the country and its people will be benefitted," she said and added, "We have been elected for five years. But our time is limited. So, I want our development works to be expedited so we can take the country forward."

Sheikh Hasina asked the local administration to work with confidence, belief and self-dignity while performing any professional duty without hesitating about what the people will say.

"Many people said it would not work or that would not be effective, but we have done it," she said.

Many countries did not even think Bangladesh had progressed so much in the last 15 years, she added.

The Prime Minister said, "We do not bother what the people are saying. We will do whatever required to be done for the welfare of the country and its people."

She said many countries have slipped from the track of a developing country, but Bangladesh didn as it has successfully overcome many obstacles and could keep a stable position in different parameters of being a developing country.

"So, we have to take preparation accordingly for the journey as a developing country," she said.

Responding to critics of her government, she pointed out that there are individuals and a certain class who are discontented regardless of the circumstances. "Most of them are very known to me. I have known about their activities from my student life," she said.

Mentioning that conspiracies are continuing against Bangladesh not only locally but also internationally, the Prime Minister said, "Don be upset seeing and hearing these. I am telling you all about it in advance."

She asked all not to pay heed to the negative remarks against the country, rather have determination, confidence and a sense of self-esteem to continue doing whatever is necessary for the welfare of the country and the people and the development of the common people.

"Don be worried, hesitated or renege hearing these rumours and negative remarks against Bangladesh. You will have to go ahead with self-confidence," she said, pointing at the government officials.

She extended her thanks to the Election Commission, public administration and law enforcement agencies, including armed forces for their roles in holding the 12th parliamentary election.

The Prime Minister also directed the field administration to implement the social safety programmes properly, to ensure waste management up to union level to protect the environment, develop every upazila in a planned way and campaign further among the common people about the universal pension scheme.

Mentioning that the government now provides Tk 45,000 crore subsidies to the gas and electricity sector, she stressed the need for enhancing the electricity tariff gradually not mounting inflation.

She said the cost of electricity production is very high but the electricity is given at a subsidised rate.

Bangladesh has already signed an agreement with India for trading in Rupee, Hasina said emphasizing on trading with few more countries in their currencies in order to reduce dependency on dollars.
