The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Monday ordered the lower court concerned to dispose the trial proceedings of a case filed over the death and injury of Rana Plaza workers within six months.
At the same time, the court stayed a High Court verdict which granted bail to Sohel Rana, owner of Rana Plaza, in the case.
As many as 1,136 redaymade garment workers died and many others injured when the 10-storeyed Rana Plaza collapsed on April 24, 2013 near Savar bus stand. Five days after the incident, on April 29, Sohail Rana was arrested from Benapole in Jashore while fleeing to India.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order after holding hearing on a petition today.
Adv Md Kamrul Islam was present in the court for Sohel Rana.
On May 24, 2015, the Criminal Investigation Department of police pressed charges against Sohel Rana and 41 others. On July 18, 2016, the Dhaka District and Sessions Judge's Court framed charges against the 41 accused, including Sohel Rana, also a former Jubo League leader.
