Police in separate drives arrested 12 people, including an expelled Swechchasebak League leader, for their alleged involvement in killing Rasel in Keraniganj on January 10.
The arrestees are-- Aftab Uddin Rabbi, the expelled organising secretary of Keraniganj South Thana Unit of Awami Swechchasebak League, Md Sajib,36, Razib Ahmed, 35, Anik Hasan alias Hira, 30, Firoj Mia, 31, Alamgir Hossain alias Thandu Alamgir ,39, Amir Hossain, 38, Md Rony, 35, Delwar Hossain Delu, 37, Md Shipon, 31, Mahfuz Rahman, 37and Mohammad Ratan Sheikh, 28.
Dhaka Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Asaduzzaman briefed the reporters about the arrest at his office in the capital on Wednesday.
He said police in separate drives arrested the main accused Rabbi with his six cohorts from boarder area of Moheshpu upazila of Jhenaidah and others in different district of the country.
He said that Saiful Islam Rasel was killed centring a dispute over the share of extortion money.
He said, “Rabbi and Rasel were close friends. Rabbi assigned the Rasel to collect extortion from different businessmen at Kaliganj but Rasel did not give the money to Rabbi”.
On January 10evening, being angry, Rabbi through his cohorts called in the victim to his office at Telghat. They tortured him till mid night. At one point, Rasel became unconscious.
Then, the killers took him to his house and handed him over to his wife around 2am, said the officer.
Next day morning, he succumbed to his injuries at Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital.
Two days later, his father Tofazzel Howlader filed a murder case against 13 people with South Keraniganj Police Station.
The police official Asaduzzaman said that the police identified the 12 ‘killers’ after analyzing the CCTV footage, viral videos related to the murder.
