The Dhaka University (DU) authorities are yet to take punitive action against Md Shamim Hossain, a token man at the universitys Proctor Office, who used to extort from illegally opened makeshift shops on the campus.

Following a report published on the Daily Observer on February 26 last year, the university authorities formed a three-member probe committee which found involvement of Shamim and a few other Proctorial Mobile Team members in extorting thousands of taka from over 300 illegal shops opened at different spots on the campus.

In the light of the probe committees recommendations, the authorities suspended Shamim and issued a show-cause notice in the first week of April, asking him to explain why he should not be sacked. In the meantime, a few letters have been exchanged between Shamim and the university authorities.

However, it is learnt that the authorities concerned were not satisfied with Shamims responses. Seeking anonymity, a few Proctorial Mobile Team members told this correspondent that Shamim was going from the pillar to the post to save his job. But reinstating Shamim would tarnish the universitys image, they added.

Talking to the Daily Observer, Proctor Prof M Maksudur Rahman said, "The matter will be included in the agenda of the next disciplinary board of the university."
