CHAR FASSON, BHOLA, Jan 30: Coastal green belts are getting damaged due to desperate tree burning in illegal brickfields in Char Fasson Upazila of the district.

Illegal brickfields have grown up in the upazila without environment-friendly technology. These have been installed in agriculture and residential areas.

Only after taking trade licences from union offices, these have been set up.

In order to control temperature, mangrove forests have been created in the coastal area at the cost of crores and crores of taka. In addition to damaging green belts, health risks are increasing while agriculture production is hampered.

In living areas, croplands, and mangrove gardens in different areas of Char Fasson, 34 brickfields have been built. Of these, 32 ones are unapproved without letter of clearance and brick burning control trade licence.

Owners of 12 kilns claimed, they are using zigzag technology but it was not found. Remaining ones are using 30-40 foot high drum chimney, instead of permitted 120-foot one.

According to a land ministry circular-1992 and Brick Burning Control Act (Amended)-2001, brickfield installation is restricted in arable land and in densely populated areas. But these kilns are flouting these acts.

A visit to 21 unions found such brickfields. Labourers said, yearly one kiln of single chimney manufactures 27-28 lakh bricks while two chimneys produce 50-lakh bricks.

It needs to burn 2,000 maunds of wood to manufacture one lakh bricks. According to this accounts, several crore maunds of wood are burnt in 34 brickfields every season.

Owners of unapproved brickfields, on condition of anonymity, said, they have applied for several times for letter of clearance to the Department of Environment (DoE). But due to various reasons, they didn get clearance letter. So they are running their kilns after taking trade licences from union offices.  They are also managing men of the DoE.

Assistant Director of DoE Md Tota Mia said, there is no scope for burning bricks in residential area. If anybody breaks the law, mobile court will conduct drives,  he added.

Char Fasson Upazila Range Officer Md Salam said, there is no legality for burning wood in brickfields. If any kiln owner burns wood of mangrove forests, the matter will be inquired, and necessary measures will be taken against him, he added.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (Acting) and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Muhammad Salek Muhit said, in coordination with the DoE, mobile court will conduct drives.
