Farmers urged to farm jute in scientific method

GAIBANDHA, Feb 9: Speakers at a function here urged the farmers to cultivate jute in a scientific method to get desired production of jute and to bring back the glory of the crop.

"Once upon a time, jute would be called the golden fibre of Bangladesh as the country would earn huge amount of foreign remittance through exporting jute to other countries of the world. But later on, the country failed to keep up the market price of jute nationally and internationally due to various reasons including low quality jute production in the country using adulterated jute seed side by side with making conspiracies at home and abroad. However, the lost heritage of jute will be restored by producing quality jute at the farmers level in the days", they  said.

They made remarks while addressing a concluding ceremony of the five-day training for the jute farmers. It was held in auditorium of Sadullapur Upazila Parishad  on Thursday afternoon.

Upazila administration and Department of Jute jointly arranged the training under advanced technology jute and jute seed production and expansion project.

Presided over by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kaosar Habib, the function was also addressed, among others, by Upazila Awami Leagues Abdul Jalil Sarker, district jute development motivator Abdul Mazed and upazila jute development motivator Mithun Kumar Sarker.  

The speakers advised the farmers to apply the latest knowledge acquired from the training to boost production of jute on their land in coming seasons.

There is no alternative to providing training for the farmers on quality jute cultivation in attaining the cherished goals, they added.

A total of 150 enthusiastic farmers coming from different unions of the upazila participated in the training.

It was conducted by assistant directors of the department Md Kamal Hossain and Solaiman Ali, Chief Inspector of jute Mokbul Hossain, Upazila Agriculture Officer Matiul Alam and Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer Mahbubul Alam Basunia.
