CUMILLA, Feb 11: Five people were killed after a covered van smashed an auto-rickshaw in Daudkandi upazila here on Sunday morning. The accident that happened at 10:00am on the Kochua Road, also left three others injured.
The deceased were identified as Pijush Mandal, 28, Jahanara Begum, 35, Shafiullah, 24, Monir, 35, and Ismail, 38. All of them were auto-rickshaw passengers. The injured were admitted to Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex.
Daudkandi Police Station OC Mozammel Haque said the accident happened when the speeding covered van crashed into the auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction on the Daudkandi-Chandpur regional road in Mahananda area under Mohammadpur union. Four died on the spot and three others were critically injured.
Later, one of the injured died on the way to Daudkandi Health Complex, he said, adding that bodies were taken to the hospital morgue. The covered van driver managed to flee.
