Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Monday informed the parliament that a total of 82,507 drug-related cases are currently under trial at different courts across the country.
However, 10,259 cases were disposed of in the last five years, he said.
He provided the information while responding to a question from Mohammad Saiful Islam, an independent member, at the Jatiya Sangsad with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
The home minister said, "A total of 82,507 drug-related cases of Department of Narcotics Control are currently under trial at different courts across the country. There are provisions in the Narcotics Control Act, 2018 (Amended in 2020), for completing investigations within 30 working days from the time of being arrested along with drugs. According to that, the charge-sheets were submitted to the courts after completing the investigations of the cases, filed by the department, within the stipulated time."
"All law enforcement agencies as well as the Department of Narcotics Control are working restlessly to implement zero tolerance against drugs announced by Prime Minister (Sheikh Hasina). Among the cases filed by the department, a total of 10,259 cases were disposed of in different trial courts in the last five years," Kamal added.
