Bangladesh Chhatra Union President and General Secretary of Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit were expelled by the university authorities for one year after being proven guilty of drawing a graffiti on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahmans portrait.
The expelled, Amartya Ray and Riddha Anindya Ganguly, President and General Secretary of JU Chhatra Union respectively are students of the 47th Batch of the Archaeology Department.
The decision was made at a syndicate meeting of the university chaired by JU Vice Chancellor Prof Md Nurul Alam on Tuesday.
JU Registrar and the Secretary of the Syndicate Md Abu Hasan disclosed the matter to journalists at the office of the Vice-Chancellor that night.
He said, "The university authorities have decided to expel them for one-year term as per the report of the inquiry committee. A case will be filed according to the prevailing laws of the state in this regard as early as possible."
Earlier on February 7, a faction of Chhatra Union men led by Amartya Roy and Riddha Anindya Ganguly drew graffiti on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahmans portrait at the wall of the new arts faculty building of the university.
Following the incident, JU unit Chhatra League submitted a memorandum on February 8 to press home their three-point demand including a thorough investigation.
Later on February 13, the university authorities formed a four-member inquiry committee led by Prof Abdullah Hel Kafi of the International Relations Department to investigate the incident.
Besides, two JU unit Chhatra League leaders were on a fast unto death on February 15 and continued for the four days consecutively to press home a three-point demand including punishment of those who were involved in the incident.
