KAWKHALI, PIROJPUR, Feb 22: Consumers are facing disarray due to increased prices of betel leaf in Kawkhali Upazila of the district.

In the last winter season, betel leaf did not grow usually. That is why betel leaf price has increased in the upazila.

Betel leaf growers suffered huge damages in the last two years due to different reasons including poor price.

The increased price of betel leaf has made growers happy. They have been getting higher prices of their produce in markets for the last three weeks.

A betel leaf purchaser at Kawkhali Haat Mozammel Hossain said, the price of betel leaf is going beyond purchasing capacity of middle-income people. Many have cut their consumption of betel leaf.

A betel leaf grower in Chirapara area Milon Das said, earlier unemployed people would get works in betel leaf orchards; over 100 day-earning families would live on working in orchards.

In the last three/four years, growers got cheap prices of betel leaf, he added. That is why many betel leaf growers are shifting to other profession, he maintained.

At present, at the wholesale level, one joura (96 pieces) betel leaf of good quality is selling at Tk 300-320 against previous price of Tk 180, medium quality at Tk 210 against previous Tk 120, and small-sized ones at Tk 100 against previous Tk 60.

Weekly on Monday and Friday, betel leaves worth lakhs of Taka are sent to different parts of the country from Kawkhali haats.

A recent visit to betel leaf haats found several hundreds of betel leaf growers. Traders from Dhaka, Khulna, Chandpur and other areas of the country were purchasing betel leaves.

Wholesalers said, this year cold wave and short rainfall affected betel leaf production. So the supply is less than demand, making bazaars instable, they added.
