Departmental action against Nakla UNO recommended

The Information Commission has recommended departmental action against Sherpur's Nakla upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Sadia Ummul Banin for obstructing the application of Right to Information Act 2009 by not assisting an information seeker in providing information.

The Information Commission conveyed its recommendation to the Ministry of Public Administration. It also said it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Public Administration to implement the recommendation.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, UNO Sadia Ummul Banin appeared before the Information Commission to explain an allegation against her of not providing information to Shafiuzzaman Rana, a correspondent for the Bangla daily Desh Rupantor at Nakla upazila in Sherpur district, about the procurement of computers and laptops under the Annual Development Program (ADP). As Rana pressed ahead with his query, the UNO set up a mobile court on March 5 and gave him a six-month jail sentence.

She appeared before the Information Commission's office at 10:15am at Agargaon in the capital. Then she explained to the commission defending her role. She came out of the office at 12:45pm. When journalists waiting there wanted to talk to her, she avoided them and got on board a CNG autorickshaw hurriedly hiding her face with a file.

After getting on board the CNG autorickshaw, Banin told journalists that "I told the Information Commission whatever I was supposed to tell. I didn't misuse of power in any way. He (Rana) was given punishment as he committed crime. Besides, he tried to take away a file and teased a woman."

Asked whether it was possible to make discourteous behaviour with a woman by a man when he approached her with his son, UNO Sadia remained silent and didn't answer to the question.
