Robbery at 2 banks in Bandarban's Thanchi in broad daylight

Armed robbers looted cash taka more than Tk 20 lakh from Sonali and Krishi Banks in Bandarban's Thanchi upazila on Wednesday afternoon.

It was learnt that, around 12:45pm, a gang of armed criminals entered the bazar area in the upazila by firing riding on three vehicles, locally called 'chander gari'. Later they went to Sonali and Krishi Banks and looted the cash taka which they found in front of them. And then left the place riding on the three vehicles.

Member of police, army and RAB are on the spot, said Sonali Bank's MD Afzal Karim.

They took around Tk 15 lakh from the Sonali Bank branch and around Tk 5-7 lakh from Krishi Bank, said Thanchi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Mamun.

Earlier around 9pm on Tuesday, some 70-80 armed criminals stormed Sonali Bank at Ruma upazila in Bandarban district. They snatched away the firearms of security police and ansar members and beat up them. The gang looted approximately Tk 1.5 crore from the vault of the bank and seized 14 firearms of the security guards.

They made vandalism inside the bank and picked up manager Nizam Uddin from a local mosque who went there for taraweeh prayer
